Make sure your affairs are in order upon arrival in the Netherlands?

When moving from Spain to the Netherlands you need to remember that you are required to register or act on the following items:

• The Internal Revenue Service (Belastingdienst);
• Registration with your local municipality (Basisregistratie Personen);
• The Departement of Motor Vehicles (Rijksdienst voor het Wegverkeer);
• Health Insurance;
• School registration, if you are moving with school aged children.

From the moment of (re)entry into the Netherlands you’ll be required to pay income-tax and health insurance in the Netherland. You can find all information regarding your immigration on the website of the Dutch IRS. Luckily you do not need to worry about your personal effects being cleared by customs, since both Spain and the Netherlands are members of the European Union.

If you’d like to bring one or multiple personal vehicles from Spain to the Netherlands, there are a few things to look out for. If you purchased your vehicle in Spain and decide to import it to the Netherlands this does not need to be an issue, as both countries are EU member states. The vehicle(s) does need to be registered in the Netherlands and get a Dutch license plate. You are exempt from paying import taxes as long as you submit an official request for exemption BPM when moving. Customs requirements for importing goods into the Netherlands

Since you are moving from Spain to the Netherlands you do not need to worry about declaring goods at customs or waiting for clearance of your personal effects by customs. There’s a free movement of goods originating in EU member states. There are however some exceptions to the rule:

1. Excise goods: you are not required to pay excise duty on goods that are intended for personal use. There is however a limit to the quantity you can bring with you.
2. Motor vehicles: you need to submit an official request for an exemption from private vehicles and motorcycle tax (BPM).
3. Specific products and domestic animals:
   1. dogs and cats
   2. counterfeit articles
   3. endangered species
   4. animal products
   5. weapons, munitions, and fake weapons
   6. narcotics
   7. cultural property
