Every year, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) compiles a list of the most popular countries for emigration abroad for emigrants born in the Netherlands.
In 2020, 20,198 Dutch people, not being Dutch residents with a second-generation migration background who leave for the country of birth of their parents (that was an extra 11,262 people), emigrated permanently abroad, according to the 2020 figures from Statistics Netherlands.
In 2020, Belgium will once again be at the top of this list for Dutch people who want to emigrate abroad, with more than 5,500 Dutch people who emigrated to Belgium. Germany is the second most popular emigration countries for Dutch people in 2020, with more than 4,400 people born in the Netherlands who left for Germany, followed by Spain in third place. In 2020, almost 2800 Dutch people emigrated to Spain.
The United Kingdom is the fourth country on the CBS list of most popular emigration countries in 2020 for Dutch people, particularly popular among people in their twenties. The United States is in fifth place for 2020, according to the CBS list.
With more than 1500 Dutch emigrated in 2020 who have built a new life in France, moving to France is in sixth place. More than average, these people are in the 65-plus age group. Something that is also visible in people who move permanently to Spain, according to the published figures of the CBS.
In 2020, emigrating to Australia takes seventh place for Dutch people, according to CBS figures. Just like the Dutch who emigrate to the United Kingdom (2624 people), permanent relocation to Australia (1482 people) is popular among people in their twenties.
