In recent years Switzerland has become one of Europe’s most popular countries to emigrate to. Whether you’re looking for a quaint getaway on the shores of Switzerland’s plentiful lakeside towns or would rather immerse yourself in the multicultural metropolis of Geneva. This tiny country hidden in the alps isn’t just breathtakingly beautiful it is also among world’s leading countries when it comes to quality of life. It comes as no surprise that Switzerland with its exorbitantly high wages and an unlimited supply of fresh mountain air remains at the top of the list of countries to move to.

Moving to Switzerland does come with its own set of obstacles. There are several things you must consider before packing up your things and shipping them off to Switzerland. This wonderful alpine country has long held its independence which also means it is not part of the European Union. This means you will have to apply for a work permit and residence. It is also wise to thoroughly research the housing market in Switzerland and to get to know local customs. The purpose of this article is to provide you with all the right tools to make your move to Switzerland go smoothly.

Required documents for your move to Switzerland

Switzerland is not an EU member state. Before the moving truck departs to Switzerland with your beloved household items to be imported, we kindly ask you to provide the following four documents so that we can clear them through customs on your behalf:

  • Copy of your residency permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung)
  • Customs form 18.44 with your signature
  • Copy of your rental agreement or mortgage paperwork
  • Detailed inventory in English (our movers will do this for you)

Customs may require additional documents, such as an employment contract, confirmation of departure from the country of departure/registration confirmation from the commune of residence, etc., to examine the right to exemption from paying duties.

Conditions for importing your belongings to Switzerland

  • Household effects may be imported tax free if they have been in your possession for at least 6 months.
  • Your possessions must be imported within 24 months after arrival to be tax exempt.
  • If the required customs paperwork is not available, you may still import them with a temporary customs clearance at extra costs.

With its four national languages and cultures you will find one that matches yours. You will find plenty of activities to partake in with your family depending on the season, like skiing and mountaineering. Live in this central European country is one that many aspire to. Things to keep in mind when moving to Switzerland

You might be looking to spend your latter years surrounded by the wealth of history and culture in Zurich. Or perhaps you are looking to further your career in Geneva. While you are looking for a professional international moving company to assist you on your journey to Switzerland, you might also want to take the following into account:

  • Work in Switzerland. Switzerland only grants a limited amount of work visas to foreigners each year. This does not apply to EU citizens. Switzerland is not a member of the European Union but is a member of the EFTA, a treaty that allows for freedom of movement and work.
  • Your car. Are you thinking of moving your car to Switzerland? This article will tell you everything you need to know in regard to moving your personal vehicle.
  • National holidays and culture. Switzerland has a large amount of both national and local holidays. It is wise to add them to your calendar as most companies and institutions will be closed on those days. There are also many cultural differences. It is important to do your due diligence and get to know as much as you can about the Swiss culture.
  • Finding a home in Switzerland. As little as 42% of Swiss people own their own home. Compared to the European average of 70% this is not much. There are plenty of houses on the market both for sale and for rent, and if you’re lucky you might find a Chateau or two.
  • The Swiss language. Switzerland is home to four languages that are native to their specific ‘canton’. These languages are German, French, Italian, and Roman. Take care though because these languages are spoken in dialect which means it is almost impossible to understand without some serious practice. Thankfully a large portion of the population speaks fluent English, especially among youths, and Swiss people are very friendly and always willing to help.
